The color sorting activity «Yarn and Hat» helps children improve their visual perception, fine motor skills, and logical thinking abilities. Additionally, it develops vocabulary with words such as «hat,» «pom-pom,» «yarn,» «ball of yarn,» and «skein.» This game is great for home use, speech therapy sessions, and kindergarten activities.

Print the worksheets on standard A4 paper. For long-term or repeated use, use thicker paper or laminate the pages. Each sheet is divided by a dotted line into a table with colored yarn and cards with hats that need to be cut out. Cutting along a straight line is a useful exercise for fine motor skills, so let your child complete this task.

There are different ways to play, depending on your child’s age. Place the grid in front of your child. Pick the first card and ask your child what color the hat and pom-pom are. Have your child use their finger to find the correct ball of yarn at the top and on the left. Then, have them find the corresponding cell at the intersection. You can lay the cards out on the grid or secure them with Velcro, a glue stick, or magnets if they are attached to the back of the cards.

Experience with these types of games shows that three- to four-year-olds initially focus only on the color of the hat, placing it in any cell in the correct row. Don’t correct them right away. Instead, draw their attention to the pom-pom. After a few cards, the child will usually notice the second clue on their own.
