Visual Discrimination Activity: Summer Shadow Match
This shadow matching game is perfect for summer activities at preschool or at home. It features familiar summer items, such as the sun, a watermelon, ice cream, and seashells. The worksheets ask children to match silhouettes to summer objects.
Print out the PDF file and start matching! The left column of each sheet features colored images of summer objects, while the right column shows their gray silhouettes in random order. There is a dot next to each object. Children must carefully analyze the shape of the colored picture and find its corresponding outline among the silhouettes. Then, they should draw a line with a pencil from one dot to the other to connect the matching pair.
This educational summer activity promotes the development of several important skills. First, searching for the corresponding silhouette stimulates visual perception, or the ability to recognize objects by their outline without being distracted by color or internal details. Second, drawing a precise line between two dots is an excellent exercise for graphomotor skills and prepares the hand for writing.
