Fruit and Vegetable Market Activity
The educational game Fruit Market is designed to help preschoolers develop vocabulary related to fruits and vegetables while improving their fine motor skills, memory, and logical thinking. It’s an interactive game that allows children to play shopkeeper while exercising their attention and visual perception skills. The task is simple: Look at the pattern card and arrange the fruit and vegetable cards on the counter in the same order.
Print the worksheets, then cut out the 18 fruit and vegetable cards and six pattern cards. For children under three years old, we recommend cutting out the cards with rounded corners. To conduct the activity, use a laminator, Velcro, glue, or magnets to easily attach the pieces to the game board.
Start gradually. Place the fruit and vegetable cards, one pattern card, and a game board in front of the child. First, name everything you see on the pattern card. This exercise helps children avoid confusing different fruits and vegetables. Then, ask your child to point to the top left corner of the pattern card and find the matching fruit or vegetable card. For three-year-olds, start with three cards so as not to overwhelm the young student.
The first round may take longer. A common mistake is picking the correct card but placing it in the wrong slot. After each game turn, ask your child to check if everything matches. Comparing requires concentration and thinking skills. One great way to practice this is by playing a shopping game. One person acts as the customer and says they want to buy the banana in the bottom left corner. The child then checks to see if the banana is really there.
