The game for the development of children from 3 years old «Healthy and unhealthy food» will teach children to sort items into categories. The task will help to develop memory, attentiveness and expand vocabulary on the topic «Food». The child will be able to learn about unhealthy foods and the benefits of a healthy diet.

Print out the worksheet healthy food sheets and cut out the round chips with pictures of food. The purpose of the game is to sort the food into two groups: healthy and unhealthy. Before starting the game, ask your child to:

  • name the food pictured;
  • talk about which of the following he or she has tried and which he or she likes best;
  • talk about the food that is unfamiliar to your baby.

During the task, tell the preschooler about the benefits of healthy food and how unhealthy food harms the body. Then ask the child to guess what food the boys in the pictures are eating. The task requires placing the food cards in the appropriate boxes on the worksheets.

Really love most of the resources on this site, but this particular one represents an outdated and problematic view on food and weight. It is better for children to learn that food is important for how they feel, their energy levels, their strength, to get enough nutrients for their bodies to grow, etc. and not have it be linked to their appearance and/or weight. Doing so can promote eating disorders, sizeism, diet culture, etc., is in conflict with current scientific understanding on food, health, and weight, and goes against best practices in developing long term healthy eating habits in children. The concept of sorting foods is great, and this worksheet could be easily updated by changing sorting from a fat and thin person, to sorting between foods that give us lots of energy versus foods that don't, or foods that we eat all the time versus foods we eat only once in a while, etc. I hope you take this into consideration and update what could be another great worksheet!
