Grocery Shopping Basket Activity
These grocery worksheets allow preschoolers to learn important daily living skills and simulate real-life situations through play. This role-playing activity is designed to expand vocabulary, teach the names of food items, and help children understand basic food storage rules. In the game, children must buy groceries from the store according to a shopping list or sort items into the pantry or refrigerator.
To prepare the grocery shopping activity, print and cut out the game pieces, including a green shopping basket, store shelves, a refrigerator, product cards, and shopping lists. To make playing with your child easier, use a laminator and Velcro. The set includes templates for two role-playing games.
- In the first game, an adult plays the store assistant and arranges all the cut-out food cards on the shelves and in the refrigerator. Then, the preschooler receives a shopping list and a green shopping basket. They must study the items on their list, find each one on the shelves, and place them in the corresponding empty circles in their basket.
- The second game focuses on independent sorting and understanding the characteristics of food. The child receives all the food cards and must sort them into the correct storage locations. They must determine which items spoil without refrigeration and which can be stored long-term at room temperature. For example, the child should put sausages, fish, and butter in the refrigerator, and oil, jam, and bread in the pantry.
